he Cardinal Newspaper in Martinsville is a good example of independent journalism.

There is an ongoing story in the southwest Virginia city of Martinsville.  Two council members, Aaron Rawls and Julian Mei, and a group of mainly white citizens have a continuing effort to remove LC Jones, the black mayor of the city.  The Martinsville Bulletin, owned by Lee Enterprises, has consistently appeared supportive of this issue.  Bill Wyatt, the paper’s main reporter, is friends with the two council members and many of the citizens, led by Patti Covington, who started a petition to remove the mayor. The Cardinal newspaper, owned by Dwayne Yancey, published an unbiased news story about this issue: “More than 3/4s of the signatures that led to the mayor’s suspension came from just one part of Martinsville. It’s a neighborhood unlike the rest of the city.”  This is a good example of a newspaper taking an independent role in informing citizens.
